Work-Life Balance for Entrepreneurs in Relationships

Sharing our lives with other entrepreneurs supports us, not just with practical advice and feedback, but because watching and listening to other entrepreneurs going through similar things supports our own choices and erodes the influence of other people in our lives who might not get it, especially when it comes to our work schedules. Don't get me wrong, I encourage entrepreneurs to have a work/life balance because it is soooo easy to just continue sitting at the computer (or whatever) to keep working, especially if that extra time leads to more money, which for many of us, it does. It's one of the reasons I encourage us all to create so we have some things we can leverage to make money more…

Genius Ideas Live in Your Joy

So, James Cordon's Carpool Karaoke is exactly the kind of thing I'm always talking about when I tell you to create stuff. He's just a talk show host, comedian and writer, right? But, the dude can also SING. And he clearly loves music, singers and songwriters. And I think his inner kid is totally geeking out at the idea of getting to sing in the car with some rock stars. He probably even got the idea driving to work one day. Here's the point:  this idea did not come from a marketing expert. No one told him, "Hey, you know what would be really successful for the show?" He didn't follow a formula to get here. Nope, he let his…

You Don’t Have to Re-Create the Wheel to Be Successful

I've been getting a lot of questions recently about 'creating' things and what that actually means. An easy way to sabotage ourselves is to think that it means we have to create something from scratch, but that's rarely the case. Most of the time, whether you're creating a class, or a product, or expanding your services, the point isn't to come up with a brand new thing all your own, but to assimilate and organize information from someone else. That's actually what experts do. They take information from a lot of different people and put it together in a way that it creates new understanding. That's it. Now, we can go into a whole copyright discussion here, and obviously if…

The Power of Emotional Courage

As I get ready to teach a webinar on passive income (and therefore yell a lot of, "Fail a lot! Fail fast! Create, create, create! Just do anything!") I can't think of a more powerful message than this TED Talk from Susan David on emotional courage and the power of feeling the feels. It's going to be hard, folks. And no business coach or blueprint in the world is going to make that easier. But that's okay. It's actually what makes it great, if you can find your peace with it. Going through hardships and staying connected to your experience deepens your connection with yourself (which brings the ability to love yourself more). Going through them with others deepens and…

She Made the Cinnamon Rolls…

So, you know how I’m always nagging you guys to create stuff? And you’re all like, “But how? Do we give advice? Do we just talk about our jobs?” Take a look at this. http://www.everywhereist.com/i-made-the-pizza-cinnamon-rolls-from-mario-batalis-sexual-misconduct-apology-letter/ So, admittedly, Geraldine DeRuiter, The Everywhereist, is a brilliant writer, but she also bakes. A lot. She loves it. She’s undoubtedly in a level of mastery with it. And, she’s pissed. She’s angry and upset about what’s happening in our world, and the unbelievably ridiculous letter from Mario Batali. So, what does she do?  She bakes about it. This post is about her baking the infamous cinnamon rolls, and what went through her mind and heart as she did it. She writes it in such…

Webinar: How Your Defenses Affect Your Pricing

Do you ever worry that your prices are too low or too high? Or that there might not be enough people who will value what you offer? Or does it sometimes seem difficult to make the money you want to make in your industry or in this economy? This workshop will examine the different ways we hold money, our enoughness as entrepreneurs, and the value we provide to our clients, as well as the way we compare ourselves to our competition. In this workshop you'll learn:…

Webinar: How Your Childhood Trauma Affects Your Website Content

If you're often asking yourself, "Why can't I just write the copy, put up the website, and launch the thing?!" I want you to know that the problem might not be what you think. It's definitely not that you're 'just not good with business,' broken, unfocused, undisciplined or anything else like that. It might simply be that you're past trauma is interfering in ways you wouldn't expect. When you go through repeated trauma, the language center of the brain can shut down completely. It's like, because you weren't allowed a say in what what happening, your brain began to surrender that skill. You literally lose the ability to create language and speak, particularly around things that declare boundaries. So, sitting…

How a History of Gaslighting Affects Your Marketing Language

In this era of fake news, “alternative facts,” and the courageous efforts of many marginalized groups to make their voices heard, it’s almost become a buzzword. We now know it’s a real thing--but it still affects us in lots of insidious ways. For several years, I’ve been noticing a trend in my work with clients: trauma from the past tends to surface whenever our work involves putting words to what they are offering the world. Over and over again, I’ve seen clients struggle with developing their marketing language.  I noticed it first in my website design clients, but it carried over to print work, and especially my branding work.  Clients would have a hard time writing basic homepage copy, and…
